Biography

The roots of the band date back to 1992, when guitarist and composer Aphazel decided to let Grimm (vocals/drums) join his solo project, transforming it into a full time band called Ancient. After the first demo "Eerily Howling Winds" (now a collector's item with over 1000 copies sold) was completely sold out in the underground, the two recorded their first album "Svartalvheim" (1994) for the French label Listenable Records (a sub-division of Osmose Productions). "Svartalvheim" today is now considered a Black Metal cult classic.

In 1995 the band recorded an E.P. entitled "Trolltaar" for the Dutch record label Damnation Records. With the release of "Trolltaar" being that of the last studio effort with Grimm who grew tired of the band's direction and Metal music in general.

After the immense success of "Svartalvheim", Aphazel was approached by Metal Blade Records, and decided to leave for the U.S. to recruit new band members. Lord Kaiaphas (known from Grand Belial's Key and Thokk) Norwegian drummer Kjetil, and female vocalist Kimberly Goss became the, then new ANCIENT line-up. The newly formed Ancient entered the studio once more in 1996 and recorded the now cult and famous album "The Cainian Chronicle" a concept album on the story of Caine and Abel performed in Black Metal style. The record was extensively promoted on all major music magazines, received excellent reviews, and was followed by a long European tour in 1997 selling over 30,000 copies worldwide.

After the tour further line up changes took place. The American Witch Erichte replaced Kimberly Goss, and a new guitarist/ keyboardist appropriately named Jesus Christ. With this new line-up the band created a new album in 1997 "Mad Grandiose Bloodfiends". A more diverse effort than the earlier works of Ancient followed by a huge world tour.

During this tour Aphazel met Deadly Kristin in Italy. Bored and tired of the frenzied life of the USA, he decided to move back to Europe. It was also then when Aphazel decided to take over the vocals himself and have Deadly Kristin as the new female vocalist. After very short time Krigse joined the band and the creation of new material began. In 1999 Ancient has released an album for the millennium called "The Halls of Eternity", being more aggressive, intense and more in the vein of the earlier works of Ancient, integrated with new elements and atmospheres. This album was great step forward for the band into the next century showing a great musical growth and maturity and obtaining a great response from magazines, radios, and most importantly the fans and listeners.

Dhilorz was recruited on bass, being a 101% sure pick with a reputation and talent few can boast about.

Despite the success the band was experiencing, Krigse parted ways with Ancient due to ever-growing personal and musical differences. Finding themselves with the difficult task of finding a valid short-notice replacement on drums, the solution almost presented itself. GroM was a friend of Kristin and a follower of the band since the early days and It immediately seemed like the best pick. After one rehearsal of a couple of hours, it as officially confirmed that GroM was indeed the one to take the place as Ancient's new stable drummer.

As of the year 2000, ANCIENT "God Loves The Dead" is the title of the mini album, first release of this year for the Ancient, done to promote and introduce the new line-up. The title track has previously been released on the LP version of "The Halls Of Eternity" but not elsewhere. The mini album also includes live recordings, remixes, a new version of "Trolltaar", one of the Ancient calssics from the early nineties, as well as a cover of Iron Maiden's 'Powerslave', done for a personal will of the band to return to their roots, and which turned out to be a great achievement. The disc also includes 2 videos for PC of the songs "God Loves The Dead" and "Um Sonho Psycodelico", both previously unreleased, and by now air played on Europe’s MTV and all major TV stations that broadcast hard-rock / Metal programs, together with the older classic video of one of Ancient's most popular songs, 'Lilith's Embrace'. The band was also re-cruited to play at the prestigious and famous Wacken Open Air festival in Germany, where they played to an audience of over 15,000 people whilst the entire concert was filmed professionally on 7 cameras. while they recieved a great response from the fans and crowd and numerous compliments from big names in Metal such as Venom, Angelwitch and former Iron Maiden vocalist Blaze Bailey. The band, the crew and the record company feel that the current line-up is the best Ancient have had so far, with great musicians...a great unity, devotion, professionality and harmony between the current members which reflects in a great team-work with excellent results as one that seems to be the most stable of the Ancient line-ups so far.

As of exactly now, November 2000, the band has taken a pause from all the touring and has retreated to write and prepare the new material which will make up the Ancient's 10th release, namely the new record which is scheduled to be recorded in Andy Larocque's well-known and top noch Los Angered studios in Sweden. The confidence is sky high and everyone knows that it will be the best and most successful Ancient album to date, which will be followed by extremely extensive world tours and new videos. All that needs to be done is to wait...and to see that Ancient, will be around for ages to come...
